StreetStrong Helping To Create Sustainable, Welcoming and Vibrant Public Spaces with StreetBond

StreetStrong revitalise former shipping container terminal into temporary, vibrant, sustainable and welcoming community space in partnership with Place Design Group.

January 2025

StreetStrong were engaged by Place Design Group, who recently designed and delivered an innovative temporary activation space – Harbour Park Community Recreation Space – on the iconic Sydney Harbour foreshore at Barangaroo, for client, Infrastructure NSW. StreetStrong implemented a vibrant and sustainable asphalt solution, StreetBond, assisting Place Design Group in their commitment to creating vibrant, functional public realms that cater to both passive and active recreation. The partnership highlights our ability to balance functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability in urban design.

Place Design Groups’s brief was to transform a former shipping container terminal into a temporary activation space, that offers a glimpse of the future parklands while promoting outdoor leisure and recreation. The project successfully integrates temporary structures, including shelters, fitness equipment, custom daybeds, above-ground sandstone planters filled with diverse plantings and solar lighting ensuring the park remains inviting and accessible day and night.

StreetStrong played a crucial role in bringing this project to life by applying StreetBond – A sustainable textured pavement coatings. StreetBond products utilise durable pigments and water-based, low-VOC formulations, ensuring resilience against weather elements and UV rays. StreetBond is specifically designed to minimise solar energy absorption and reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect. This special pigment can release between 8-12°C of heat. – a vital feature for a site exposed to Sydney’s harsh sun.

What is Urban Heat Island Effect?
An urban heat island occurs when a city experiences much warmer temperatures than nearby rural areas. The difference in temperature between urban and less-developed rural areas has to do with how well the surfaces in each environment absorb and hold heat.

The pavement coating not only enhances the park’s visual appeal but also contributes to a more comfortable and sustainable environment for visitors. It is durable, fast to install, anti-slip and low maintenance. The durable and eco-friendly coatings align perfectly with the project’s aim to revitalise the community space while setting the stage for future park developments.

By converting a once-vacant site into a vibrant public space, this project delivers immediate community benefits while offering a blueprint for the future.
